Matisyahu Birmingham Concert reviews
Matisyahu--Shockingly Disappointing! :(
I am a 100% Matisyahu fan, and I have been for years-- from the very start! I was super excited to see him--in fact, it was a Bucket List item for me. I bought tickets in the PIT, and I couldn't wait to see him up close! Even though it was on a MONDAY night--I drove to LA anyway & waited excitedly. But it turned out to be really disappointing. He walked out on stage with a red Solo cup and a small glass which looked like it had vodka or something--and for the first 15 min of the show, it seemed that he cared more about his cups & drinking than the audience. He barely acknowledged the crowd with a ,"Hey LA" shouted in the dark--when he was coming in. That was it. He didn't say any more. He turned his back to the audience 5 or 6 times while he sipped his drinks & talked to his band mates, and then he danced off the stage in what looked like a refill break for his drinks--when he came back on stage 5 min later with his two cups. It didn't seem like he really cared, and my impression was that he was either drunk or high or drugged-- or some combination of something. Most of the concert he was in his own private LA LA land--like he was just going thru the motions on the songs. I felt like it didn't really matter if the audience was there. He wasn't stoked to be there--it was just strange. The music was trance-like--not reggae like. We couldn't even get a solid dance beat--so the audience mostly just stood there watching. In the pit, we were right at the bottom of the stage, but he barely acknowledged us, and very few people could move in the trance like sound. I'm a huge dancer, and I just stood there. It crossed my mind to just leave early--it was that disappointing. But I stayed till the end--just hoping it would improve. But it really never did. I love Matisyahu, but this concert was a complete FAIL. Half the people in the pit were gone after the first hour, and people were leaving early. We spent $$$$$$ on tickets, swag, concessions, parking, and getting to LA, and the truth is that it wasn't worth the effort. I have rarely been disappointed at a concert, but this really was in poor form. Even when he played King Without a Crown, he played it upbeat for one minute, then transformed it into another slow, trance-like number. I get that artists need to mix it up, but Matis just didn't give the audience the love and attention that we had hoped for. He didn't engage us, and I couldn't get into his spacey, trance vibe. I was there to sing and dance, and I just watched him sing slow numbers to himself with his eyes closed--in his drunk/drugged/spaced out state. It made me just wanna cry! Still, I can say I checked it off my Bucket List, but this was a really awful concert. I almost wanted to return my $100 of swag afterward! Sad face! Shocking! Disappointing! The opening bands were more engaging than Matis that night. The one up side is that the Wiltern is beautiful. There's not a bad seat in the house, and the art deco is completely FAB! But apart from that, the event was sad & underwhelming. And this comes from the biggest Matisyahu fan ever! :( Tears! This is brutal, but I'm being honest.
